Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the planet

Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou has implemented several measures to align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. Initiatives include the use of reusable containers across the hotel, removal of single-use plastic packaging wherever possible and a re-engineered drinks menu to avoid the need for plastic items such as stirrers. Looking ahead, we are working closely with our suppliers to share our goals and educate their network, working together on long-term solutions for the reduction of waste in our community. We have also introduced sustainability preferences to Fans of M.O. members, so they can opt into bringing their own toiletries to reduce in-room waste.

We treat and recycle greywater from showers and sink basins throughout the hotel. The water is reused onsite for toilet flushing and other non-potable uses. In conjunction with TaiKoo Hui shopping complex, Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou has recycled and repurposed over 6,000 m³ of greywater to date.

Here at Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou, we have a waste management tracking system which donates leftover food waste to animal farms to use as fertilizer. This key initiative helps to divert over 45% of all hotel food waste so that it does not end up in landfills.

As part of our commitment to supporting biodiversity we are proud to work with a local beekeeper and have created our own beekeeping programme complete with multiple beehives on property. Our guests are then integrated into our sustainability practices as they are treated to fresh honey in our restaurants and bars, harvested from our own hives.

For communities

To support our local community, we regularly organise bazaar sales and charity events to raise monetary donations for underprivileged children, orphanages and animals in need. Our colleagues commit over 200 hours annually to volunteer at a number of charitable organisations within the city, including the Wilber Foundation, supporting children suffering from leukaemia, and MPAM (My Paws and Me) a shelter for homeless animals.

For you

When visiting our Spa, our overarching goal is to help you find respite, relaxation and mental balance, tucked away from everyday life stressors. Beyond the Mandarin Oriental signature spa treatments for which we are renowned, our dedication to wellbeing extends to our fitness & wellness centre offerings of yoga, boxing, HIIT workouts and personal training.

Wellbeing and sustainability go hand-in-hand as our Spa colleagues share their expertise by offering classes on the creation of eco-soap and fragrant potpourri sachets. Activities like these elevate sustainability awareness and the importance of utilizing natural ingredients vs those that are highly processed.
