Naturally Better

One of our guiding principles at Mandarin Oriental is ‘Acting with responsibility’, which we strive to achieve through our Naturally Better plan. We’re on a journey to make things Naturally Better for the planet, for communities, and for you. As well as embracing and putting into practice our global sustainability initiatives, such as eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021, here at Mandarin Oriental, Canouan we also have our own local initiatives to make sure we play our part in making your stay more sustainable.

For the planet

We have implemented several measures across our hotel which align with our group-wide policy of eliminating single-use plastic by March 2021. We have removed plastic straws, water bottles from The Spa (replaced with infused waters and glass cups), and switched to sustainable, reusable containers. By the end of December 2020, we will have eliminated plastic bottle consumption by implementing a water bottling system, replacing all single-use plastic in-room amenities and moving to innovative bamboo-based room keys.

In an effort to contribute to energy consumption reduction, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is actively replacing all bulbs to LED retrofit lights throughout our property.

Every Festive Season Mandarin Oriental, Canouan makes the holiday season special for fans of all ages. Canouan Cares for Hawksbills, is a one of a kind event benefitting the island’s turtle namesake, and takes place on the powder soft sands of Godahl Beach. In partnership with the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary, families can be active participants in supporting one of The Caribbean’s greatest natural resources when we release the turtles into the wild.

As a supporter of natural resources, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan participates in quarterly beach clean-ups throughout the island ensure our beaches are spotless for both guests and residents (including the island’s wildlife residents).

For communities

Simple educational tools such as pens and notebooks are difficult to come by in The Grenadines. Supporting Cargo 4 Kids is our way of lending a hand. This program invites guests to make the most of extra suitcase space by packing a few school supplies to bring along on holiday. Upon arrival, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan delivers the supplies to classrooms in need throughout St. Vincent & The Grenadines.

For you

We are proud to support sustainable farmers that also reduce carbon footprints. The hotel sources our pastry chocolate from the St. Vincent & The Grenadines Chocolate Company, the largest sustainable chocolate factory, which is conveniently located nearby on our island neighbour St. Vincent. The chocolate is also available in all mini bars for the continued enjoyment of our guests. The cocoa comprises of 100% Vincentian cocoa beans and the team of chocolatiers make and hand wrap every bar onsite.

To add a Vincentian taste to every meal, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan currently uses gourmet sea salt from Grenadine Sea Salt, produced on the pristine island of Bequia, one of 32 islands that make up St. Vincent & The Grenadines. In addition to the pristine waters that surround the island of Bequia, the finished product is uniquely produced by a solar evaporation method offering a high quality and perfectly pure natural resource.
